Round
6 Report

The
sixth and final round of Super Lap Scotland 2014 was the third
and final reverse direction round of Knockhill circuit for 2014.
The aim of the day - building up to a perfect lap in the Super
Lap Final. Thankfully the weather was much better than the last
reverse direction round in the summer, and with the Paul Walker
tribute show the paddock was packed..
SLS is simply - man and machine against the track and clock. Competitors
complete two warm up sessions to perfect their lines and tweak
their set ups ahead of qualifying. In qualifying competitors get
a couple of attempts at topping the timesheets by completing 2
flying laps, with the top 5 competitors in each class progressing
to the SLS Final; where one lap, that's right, one single lap
decides it all. There were several close calls on these all or
nothing laps!
There are six classes, all based on the power-to-weight ratio
of each car; which allows even the most modest of road cars the
opportunity to compete against the super-tuned monsters out on
track; with points awarded for qualifying positions and overall
finishing positions in each class. Meaning that, a class E competitor
(least powerful) could easily take the overall Championship title
from a Pro class competitor (most powerful) by scoring more points
throughout the season, giving us an overall "King of Knockhill".
There
were new faces and some regulars missing. Robert Elliott (Class
E 208 GTi), George Rigby (Class D Impreza Spec C), Lesley Antrobus
(Class C M5) and Andy Forrest (Prototype Impreza RA) all made
their SLS debuts. Both the Kindness', Brian Rennie, Jack Strathdee,
Wayne Sutherland and Calum Keith were all missing for one reason
or another.
Warmup
The
warmup session traditionally see's competitors giving their cars
a shake down whilst scrubbing tyres or finding out more about
the track conditions. Nobody told this to George Rigby. He stormed
out of the blocks and led the Class D/E Warmup session by 3 seconds
with a 57.712s lap. Class E was led by Steve King, with Dave Herd
0.3s behind.
The Pro/A/B/C warmup session saw Charlie Shaw take top spot with
a 53.460 lap not far off his current lap record. Andy Forrest
was struggling with mechanical issues resulting in a mid 58s lap.
Round 1 of the much publicised 1000bhp battle to Shaw! Keith Cowie
took the 3rd spot with a respectable 57.313 on his 10th lap.
Practice
The
drivers now started to push on, with some practicing batches of
1 flying lap on cool tyres to get some practice for the final.
Other drivers took the different approach and used the time to
get maximum laps in - Matt Collins hammering out 20laps in his
Porsche Cayman. Dave Herd took the fastest time in Class E with
a 1:02.912, with Steve King not far behind. Robert Elliot was
steadily getting quicker as the session went on. Class D was led
by Jason Ogg in the RA Motorsport backed Seat Leon Supercopa.
His final lap of the session was 56.734s, which lap narrowly displaced
Matt Collins to second. The margin was only 0.1s. George Rigby
took a credible 3rd in much less track focussed machinery. Behind
the top three the rest were very close, with 1.5s separating the
remaining 5 competitors.

The
Pro/A/B/C Practice saw
everyone generally picking the pace up a notch. Andy Forrest led
the way with a 53.756 lap despite some further mechanical niggles
to contend with. Charlie Shaw was 0.5s behind, but 2s clear of
Andy Napier in 3rd. The smallest of margins separated Napier (RA
Motorsport) and Paton in 4th (HQ Garage) - 0.012! David Long was
snapping at the Pro cars heels just 0.289 behind Paton in the
EVO. Bob Mackay led class C, with a great drive from John Wilson,
setting a new PB to take the second spot in front of Keith Cowie.
Qualifying
Qualifying
is scored, so the pressure is on to perform. Drivers get three
chances at two flying laps, this give practice on cold tyres for
the Super Lap Final.
Dave
Herd took full qualifying points in Class E with a 62.810s lap.
0.5s further back was Steve King in his Clio, setting a 63.303
on his final hot lap. Robert Elliott took 3rd, with Craig McDowall
4th.
Class
D qualifying was won in style by Jason Ogg. He set a new P.B.
and lap record with his 55.473s lap. Matt Collins finished over
1s behind, with George Rigby in 3rd with his fastest lap of the
day, 57.243. Frank Ogg set a new P.B. to take 4th after a large
off in the morning. As with the previous sessions there was very
little to separate the rest of class D. Adrian Milne (EVO) destroying
his previous P.B. to take 5th, 0.2s ahead of Dryburgh (Impreza).
Less than 0.3s separated 7th to 9th. David Gebbie and Brian Innes'
Porsche Caymans were split by the giant killing Honda Prelude
of Allister Phillips.
Class
C has been exceptionally close between Cowie, Sutherland and Mackay
all season. With Wayne missing, John Wilson stepped up in his
FWD Focus and kept the two more powerful 4x4 drivers honest, pushing
them all the way and earning one of the drivers of the day awards
in the process. Bob Mackay took the top spot in qualifying with
a 56.592, setting another P.B and class lap record. Keith Cowie
took second to add vital points for the championship. John Wilson
rounded off the top 3, with Steven Warman, Kenny Stewart and Lesley
Antrobus following on.
David
Long took top spot in A. Despite being the only car competing
in the class this round, he still pushed and set new lap records!
Pro
- Charlie Shaw took maximum points with a 53.432s lap despite
being beaten on track by Andy Forrest (52.124). Andy was running
outwith the class structure so was not competing for points. Russ
Paton narrowly beat Andy Napier to second. The gap just 0.2s between
them.
Final
One
final flying lap to decide the points, all or nothing. 50points
are available for 1st, down to 10 for 5th. Cars went out in order
of qualification, with slowest out first, building up to the fastest
car. Conditions were good, so lap records were there to be broken.
Class
E - Steve King took top spot with a 62.995s lap. Dave Herd
took second but dented his King of The Hill championship hopes.
Robert Elliot took 3rd on his debut.
Class
D - Matt Collins took the victory with a 57.241s lap, with
George Rigby in second and Callum Dryburgh in third. Jason Ogg.
Frank Ogg took fourth and Adrian Milne rounded off the scoring
positions in his EVO. Jason Ogg's Class D title hopes went up
in smoke as the Leon suffered gearbox issues on his hotlap.
Class
C - Bob Mackay took top spot and a full 65 points for the
day. Keith Cowie took second in his Clark Motorsport backed R35
GTR and John Wilson third in his WR Tuning Focus RS.
Class
A - David Long took full points and the Class A Championship.
PRO
- Charlie Shaw again proved too much for the opposition and finished
2.5 seconds ahead of Russ Paton and Andy Napier. Despite Charlie
setting a new PRO lap record of 52.569s, it was blown away by
the Prototype Impreza of Andy Forrest. Andy stormed round in a
staggering 50.807s.
