Saturday 19th July 2014 - SLS Round 4

Round 4 Report

Super Lap Scotland Round 4 - Saturday 19th July

The fourth round of Super Lap Scotland saw the second installment of the reverse direction layout of Knockhill circuit for 2014. There were some regulars missing and some heroic efforts by some to get their cars ready for these rounds (Calum Keith had to build a complete engine from Round 3!). The aim of the day - building up to a perfect lap in the Super Lap Final. As an added attraction the British Sprint Championship were also running on the same day.

What is SLS - man and machine against the track and clock. Competitors complete two warm up sessions to perfect their lines and tweak their set ups ahead of qualifying. In qualifying competitors get a couple of attempts at topping the timesheets by completing 2 flying laps, with the top 5 competitors in each class progressing to the SLS Final; where one lap, that's right, one single lap decides it all. Its a very fine line between being a hero or spinning off.

There are six classes, all based on the power-to-weight ratio of each car and driver; which allows even the most modest of road cars the opportunity to compete against the super-tuned monsters out on track; with points awarded for qualifying positions and overall finishing positions in each class. Meaning that a class E competitor (least powerful) could easily take the overall Championship title from a Pro class competitor (most powerful) by scoring more points throughout the season, giving us an overall "King of Knockhill".

Warmup

The warmup session was run in thick fog and rain, not ideal conditions for setting good lap times, but good practice for a potential wet final. Notable performances in the wet were from Matt Collins, placing his Class D Porsche in second place overall. Charlie Shaw continued his dominance from previous rounds and set the pace with a laptime 3 seconds clear of the field. Adam Kindness was having problems with the shared TrackScotland Impreza. An alternator bracket had sheered, and a failed relay was causing the car to misfire. Fiona also had a bad start and had to drive to Aberdeen to get her race licence. Both missed out on practice 1 and 2. There was little to take from the times set in these sessions, with most people choosing to get used to the conditions rather than push too far.

Practice

The practice session was again wet and foggy, but the drivers will now be pushing a bit harder after the warmup session. Dave Herd topped Class E in his Trackprep Fiesta with a 1:09.102, 6 seconds clear of Craig McDowall who was having some issue in the conditions. Class D was much closer but Adrian Milne topped the class in his EVO with a 1:05.221 that took him 1.5seconds clear of Jason Ogg in his Leon Supercoppa that was having DSG gearshift issues. Class C was topped by Wayne Sutherland with an impressive 1:02.664 that placed him second overall. Bob Mackay was over 2 seconds behind his DG Motorsport team mate. Jack Strathdee set the fastest laptime ( 1:07.206 ) in Class B with Adam Kindness still at HQ Garage getting repairs done. David Long took the top spot in A with a 1:05.081 whilst Fee Kindness was still MIA. PRO saw Charlie Shaw continue the trend from the first practice with a 57.601 lap in the AG Motorsport Focus that was 5 seconds quicker than Andy Napier in the RA Motorsport Impreza.

Qualifying

Qualifying is scored, so the pressure is on to perform. Drivers get three chances at two flying laps, this give practice on cold tyres for the Super Lap Final. The track was still wet with poor visibility.
Dave Herd scored maximum points in Class E qualifying, setting a 1:09.141s lap that was 1 second clear of Craig McDowall in his Clio. Class D qualifying was won by Collins in his Porsche Caymen, 4 seconds clear of Jason Ogg who was still suffering gearchange issues. Jason was 0.4second in front of his father Frank in the same car. Class C saw Wayne Sutherland continue to dominate the class in the wet conditions with a 1:02.340. This placed him just over 1 second ahead of Bob Mackay, who in turn was just over 1 second ahead of Keith Cowie in his R35 GTR. Class B saw Adam Kindness return to the track and take full points in qualifying with a 1:02.510 which was just ahead of Jack Strathdee in the 2wd Focus RS. Class A also saw Fiona Kindness hit the track for the first time in the day and top the time sheets with a 1:05.563, 4 seconds clear of David Long who had had an excursion into a tyre wall earlier in the day. PRO class was a 4 way battle. All 4wd, all turbo. Charlie Shaw took the top spot and the full 15 points with an impressive 56.987s lap in the wet on road legal MSA 1B tyres. Second was Andy Napier, and third Brian Rennie.

Final

One final flying lap to decide the points, all or nothing. 50points are available for 1st, down to 10 for 5th. Cars went out in order of qualification, with slowest out first, building up to the fastest car. The track was very wet again, so no lap records were going to be set.

Class E - Dave Herd won the Class E final, beating McDowall by 1.5s. Full points for the day, with these valuable points cementing Dave's challenge for the 'King of the Hill Championship'

Class D - Matt Collins rounded off a great day with a win in the final to score full points for the day. His winning time was 2 seconds quicker than Jason Ogg in second. Adrian Milne took 3rd to claim his second podium finish of the season in a very competitive class.

Class C - As per Round 2 and 3, Class C was VERY close in the final. The top 3 drivers were only separated by only 1.5 seconds. Wanye took his second win of the season and third fastest overall in the final. Bob Mackay took second with Keith Cowie securing third.

Class B - Adam Kindness took first with a low 62s lap, full points for the day and fourth fastest lap overall in the final. Jack Strathdee spun out at McIntyres on what looked to be a promising lap. The Super Lap final is a tough one to get right in tricky conditions.

Class A - David Long recovered well from his earlier off and picked the pace up again to take the top spot from Fiona Kindness buy a slender 0.169s margin. An impressive feat for a lightweight RWD Caterham in the difficult conditions.

PRO - Charlie Shaw again proved too much for the opposition and finished 3 seconds ahead of Napier with a 57s lap. Brian Rennie took third to round off the podium.
