Super
Lap Scotland Round 3 - Sunday 25th May

The
third round of Super Lap Scotland and second on the conventional
direction Knockhill circuit for 2014. There were some new and
returning faces (Russ Paton, Graeme Beveridge, Allister Phillips
and Stephen Dickson) and sadly some retirements from Round 2 that
didn't make round 3 (Calum Keith and Jim Semple). The aim of the
day - building up to a perfect lap in the Super Lap Final. As
an added attraction Time Attack were also running on the same
day.
SLS is simply - man and machine against the track and clock. Competitors
complete two warm up sessions to perfect their lines and tweak
their set ups ahead of qualifying. In qualifying competitors get
a couple of attempts at topping the timesheets by completing 2
flying laps, with the top 5 competitors in each class progressing
to the SLS Final; where one lap, that's right, one single lap
decides it all. There were several close calls on these all or
nothing laps!
There are six classes, all based on the power-to-weight ratio
of each car; which allows even the most modest of road cars the
opportunity to compete against the super-tuned monsters out on
track; with points awarded for qualifying positions and overall
finishing positions in each class. Meaning that, a class E competitor
(least powerful) could easily take the overall Championship title
from a Pro class competitor (most powerful) by scoring more points
throughout the season, giving us an overall "King of Knockhill".
Warmup
The
warmup session was run in thick fog and rain, not ideal conditions
for setting good lap times, but good practice for a potential
wet final. Notable performances in the wet were from Steve King,
placing his Clio 2 seconds clear in Class E. Callum Dryburgh did
well to split the two more track focussed cars of Frank Ogg and
Matt Collins in Class D. Class C again looked like the class to
watch with Wayne Sutherland, Keith Cowie and Bob MacKay trading
places during the session. At the end of the session the top 3
were only separated by 1 second. Class B picked up where it left
on Saturday with Jack Strathdee and Adam Kindness running closely
together. Adam was now dual driving a similar powered Impreza
(with his wife Fiona) after suffering engine issues during round
2. Class A threw up a surprise with David Long setting a storming
64s lap, with a clear 5s gap over Fiona Kindness. The conditions
should have favoured the 4wd Impreza of Fiona. PRO only had two
cars for the first session, with Charlie Shaw setting an unbeatable
56s lap, some 10s clear of Brian Rennie. 56s in the wet on MSA
1B tyres!
Practice
The
practice session was again wet, but the drivers will now be pushing
a bit harder after the warmup session. Allister Phillips, missing
from the morning warmup time sheets, topped Class E with a 67s
lap but was pushed very hard by Steve King. Only 0.009 separated
the top two. Dave Herd and Graeme Beveridge weren't far behind
in their Fiestas, both running 69s laps. Callum Dryburgh went
one better in Practice and took 1st place, 0.2s ahead of Frank
Ogg in the Leon Supercopa. Adrian Milne showed good pace to take
3rd spot with a credible 67s lap. Class C was missing Keith Cowie,
but it was business as usual for the EVO driving DG Motorsport
team mates Bob and Wayne. Bob eventually edging out Wayne by 0.4s.
John Wilson took 3rd in the impressive MkII Focus RS. Class D
was much closer this time round, with both Adam and Jack making
noticeable progress in the wet. Jack managed to get a low 63s
lap (impressive for high power FWD in the wet) but ultimately
traction was against him. Kindness took 1st by less than a second,
with a low 62s lap. Class A again was dominated David Long, who
was really getting to grips with the Caterham R400 in the wet.
He finished the session 3 seconds clear of Fiona. PRO was again
dominated by Shaw in the Focus (56.850), with Rennie getting to
within 8 seconds this time round with an improved 64.474s lap.
Qualifying
Qualifying
is scored, so the pressure is on to perform. Drivers get three
chances at two flying laps, this give practice on cold tyres for
the Super Lap Final. The fog had lifted and the rain had stopped.
The Time Attack drivers had also do a good job of clearing water
off the track. With this dry track times should tumble.
Allister Phillips scored maximum points in Class E qualifying,
setting a 60s lap that was 2 seconds clear of Dave Herd and Steve
King. Class D qualifying was won by Collins in his Porsche Caymen,
1 second clear of Frank Ogg, who was a further second clear of
Dryburgh in the Impreza. Class C saw John Wilson picking up the
pace to set a 59.0s lap, but it wasn't enough to unseat the top
3 in this class. Bob Mackay took 1st with a 57.287, with Keith
Cowie and Wayne Sutherland more than a second behind on 58s laps.
Class B saw Adam Kindness going 2 seconds clear of Jack Strathdee
in the Focus who had suffered 3rd gear failure. David Long got
even faster again in Class A, smashing his previous P.B. to set
a 55.6s lap which placed him first. Fiona suffered a spin at the
hairpin on one of her early laps which ruined both of her initial
hot laps. She could only set a 57s lap during qualification. PRO
class involved a little bit of drama! Charlie Shaw was missing
from the line up in the pits, with his crew working busily under
the Focus to fix a transmission issue. They fixed the issue in
record time and Charlie got the car to the pits with seconds to
go. True to form, Charlie went out an set a new SLS lap record
(52.048) and took P1 in the process. Brian Rennie took second
with a 56.537 and Russ Paton managed 3rd.
Final
One
final flying lap to decide the points, all or nothing. 50points
are available for 1st, down to 10 for 5th. Cars went out in order
of qualification, with slowest out first, building up to the fastest
car. The track was very wet again, so no lap records were going
to be set.
Class
E - Allister Phillips dominated the Class E final, setting
an amazing lap 2.15s clear of the opposition. Steve King took
second and Dave Herd third.
Class
D - 4wd showed its benefits in the wet and the final was dominated
by the Impreza of Dryburgh and EVO of Milne. Dryburgh took first,
but was only 0.343 ahead of Adrian Milne. Frank Ogg took 3rd.
Class
C - As per Round 2, Class C was VERY close in the final. The
top 3 driver were only separated by only 0.053 seconds. Wanye
took first, Keith second and Bob third. All with 64s laps.
Class
B - Adam Kindness took first with a 63s lap, full points for
the day and second fastest lap overall in the final. Jack Strathdee
coasted round in his Focus to set a time and take the valuable
points.
Class
A - David Long had the momentum from the morning, setting
faster laps than Fiona in all sessions. Fiona found some form
and narrowly beat David in the final. She set a 65s lap to David's
66s.
PRO
- Charlie Shaw again proved too much for the opposition and finished
8 seconds ahead of Rennie with a 58s lap. Paton was starting to
get more out of his EVO and wasn't far behind. He will be one
to watch in future rounds.
* Class D and E results remain provisional, pending investigation
of an appeal *
