the Blue Book specifies two at each end, so a bridle can be used for towing.

Alan,
what we checked complied with what the regulations required. There is a limit on what we can check on each car at pre-event Scrutineering. The new regs are much better, specify mountings and require two loops, so the load will be spread. |
renny, I have seen them on touring cars and seen them fail coming up the brae at the med centre (least said about the dafty who used his steel toecapped boot to act as a chock on the car concerned). Dont forget when a car is in the mud at various locations the stress on the towing gear will be far higher, whilst we try and push cars onto tarmac as the stresses of a few marshals pushing is a lot less than the landrover snatching. It is up to the car builder to make tow mountings solid as in the heat of battle we will find something solid to attach a strop to in order to effect recovery _________________ Race marshal found at knockhill and anywhere lunatics crash

There must be substantial towing eyes securely fixed to the main structure of the vehicle, front and rear, within the confines of the body to enable the vehicle to be moved. Cars of periods A to F and single seater racing cars are exempt from this requirement subject to a suitable towing point being clearly identified. Towing eyes must have a minimum internal diameter of 60mm. Towing eyes/towing points should be painted a contrasting bright colour (dayglo red, orange or yellow, marked with an arrow and the word “tow”. (b) The following configuration and specifications are strongly recommended: Vehicles to be equipped with two front and two rear towing eyes positioned equally either side of the longitudinal center line. The towing eyes to be made of steel wire rope of at least 6mm diameter with a 6x19 wire core. Each towing eye to have a breaking-strain of at least 2 tons and allow the passage of a cylinder with a diameter of 60mm. The towing eye to be fixed to a structural part of the chassis with a minimum of M10 (Grade 8. fixings, the inner part must be flexible in order for the towing eye to be retracted inside the bodywork profile. Towing eyes should be situated 25mm forward of the adjacent bodywork with clearance of 100mm above and below to enable recovery crews to attach straps and shackles. A “pull-cord” to be attached to the towing eye to enable the marshals to access it. The end attached to the chassis may be either ‘thimble’ or ‘open-loop’ style. .
so.... to metal that will take the weight of the car. Chassis point, orig tow locations etc _________________ Impreza Race Car, 1200kg, 480bhp - SLS/SMRC

As Adam and Alan haver said, remember that the towing eyes will be under a significant loading when you are being recovered from the gravel (or mud). You need to have M10 fixings to a substantial part of the structure.
The new MSA Regulation has been adopted as mandatory for the SMRC Championships where we had regular failures of the fabric style towing points. Mini's BMWs and Fiestas. Recommended for Sports and Saloons and Classics. _________________ Renny

It clashes with the British GP which they were always keen to avoid, the Mach Stages Rally and it is in the middle of the holidays. I know I'm struggling for a Team that weekend, and I imagine there will be many others who can't be at Knockhill.
I'm waiting on an update from SMRC |
