Over the years that transponders have been used at KMSC / SMRC Knockhill events we have always provided a number for hire, over the last few years the number of Competitors looking to hire transponders at events has increased significantly. After carrying out a Risk Assessment on our race meeting operations and the changes required to comply with Covid‐19 guidance we have highlighted the hire and return of transponders as an area of high risk. We are isolated in the Timing Box but usually have a steady stream of Competitors coming in to collect hire transponders, this close proximity and potential contact while issuing transponders is a risk. As a step to help mitigate this risk we are providing below a list of transponder Suppliers and request that Competitors consider buying their own transponder and fitting it to their vehicle. SMART Timing do not have the facility at the moment to offer transponders for sale.
The unit recommended is a MyLaps Car / Bike direct powered transponder either a TR2 or X2 model which are available on 1, 2 or 5 year subscription terms. Competitors can also search for an earlier AMB / MyLaps TranX260 unit, these are older but have the advantage of being subscription free and are still perfectly usable on UK circuits. Preference with transponders is for Competitors to go with a direct powered unit wired directly to the vehicle power supply and left in place, the direct powered unit reduces the chance of a Competitors forgetting to charge their transponder prior to an event, a non‐working transponder will only be picked up once the vehicles are on track.
Transponder units are often to be found on well‐known auction web‐sites but be wary of buying any rechargeable transponders through this route, it may that they are for sale with the in‐built battery near the end of its life and they can be expensive to replace and they do not always work well after battery replacement.

SMART Timing are be happy to provide any help they can if Competitors have any questions relating to transponders for motorsport events or any issues Competitors may have with setting up a transponder, including subscription renewals.

What do the newer transponders cost subscription wise?

I had a quick look on ebay and the AMB transponders are about £400 give or take for a wired / rechargable ?
Is that what they go for?

This X2 is currently £250 which for a hard wired transponder has to be ok value for money if your racing alot?

I have a rechargeable amb 260 that I can hire out for the day if anyone's still looking.

I think smart took £20 for the day, so that's fine by me too.
